RedData's blockOS recognized by Western Digital for its out-of-the-box SMR support

December 15, 2025 — Software-Defined Storage (SDS) solutions typically lack native support for Shingled Magnetic Recording (SMR) technology. The few SDS solutions that do offer SMR functionality typically implement it using an existing filesystem, such as btrfs or xfs. This architecture, which involves layering an SDS abstraction over an already-abstracted file system to manage data, introduces complexity and raises concerns regarding both performance and reliability. In contrast, SDS solutions with native SMR support are specifically architected and tested to handle the unique zoned nature and write rules of SMR drives.
