RedData’s Open Archive is a software-defined storage solution that simplifies data lifecycle management. It uses transparent tiering to automatically move inactive data to a lower-cost archive, integrating directly with primary file systems for optimal storage efficiency.
RedData’s blockOS is a low-overhead object store that manages Zoned Storage devices. It is designed to support host-managed SMR HDDs and Zoned Namespaces SSDs, in addition to managing devices that implement traditional block storage protocols for SATA, SAS, or NVMe.
Overview
RedData's Open Archive technology automatically moves inactive data to low-cost archive storage using transparent tiering, ensuring robust data protection while simplifying the entire data lifecycle. Open Archive implements blockOS, a low-overhead Object Store to manage physical media, designed to integrate with native HDD and SSD storage device capabilities, such as Shingle Magnetic Recording (SMR) and Zoned Namespaces. RedData's blockOS is specifically architected to support the unique zoned nature and write rules of SMR drives.
Open Archive comes pre-installed and tested on our Open Archive Appliance, available in multiple configurations.
Open Archive Manager
Open Archive Appliance

Open Archive Manager is our software-only product for deployment on existing hardware:
- Open Archive Manager Basic is Free limited features edition;
- Open Archive Manager Enterprise support the full suite of functionality, including ZeroWatt, for OEM or bespoke deployments (our Professional Services organization will support deployments when installed within an existing environment).
A December 2025 Western Digital white paper recognizes RedData's blockOS and Open Archive for its native support of SMR drives. RedData's Open Archive Appliance is available with Western Digital SMR drives. The paper "Implementing SMR: Design Considerations and Best Practices" is available on the Western Digital website, located here.
